Tree Regulation Amendment Project Nears Completion

Published July 1, 2026

After more than a year of work, the City of Lake Oswego’s Tree Regulation Amendment Project is entering its final phase.

City staff, a project consultant, and a 12-member Tree Task Force have worked together to evaluate and update the City’s tree regulations. Guided by the goals of Lake Oswego’s Urban and Community Forestry Plan, the proposed amendments are intended to protect the long-term health of the urban forest, ensure compliance with state law, and make the City’s tree regulations clearer and easier to administer.

Over the past several months, the draft amendments have been reviewed and refined with input from the Tree Task Force, Planning Commission, City Council, Development Review Commission, Sustainability Advisory Board, and Parks Board.

On June 8, 2026, the Planning Commission held a public hearing and voted to recommend approval of the proposed amendments to the City Council. The Commission formally adopted its findings, conclusions, and order on June 22.

The Lake Oswego City Council will hold a public hearing on Tuesday, July 21, 2026, at 3:00 p.m. in the Council Chamber to consider final adoption of the amendments. If approved, the updated tree regulations are expected to take effect this fall.

Residents are encouraged to participate in the process. Written testimony may be submitted before the hearing, and community members may also provide verbal testimony during the July 21 City Council meeting.
